Foster City K9 Handler Passes

Foster City Police Officer Mike McLaughlin Passes.

Police officer McLaughlin appeared to be in good health, and there were no warning signs that Jan. 9 would be the last night he would spend in his Fremont home. Authorities said they believe the Foster City police officer died of natural causes. He was 48 years old.

Friends and colleagues described a man who was passionate about his family, which included the dogs he trained, worked with as an officer and ran through their paces in regional and international competitions.

McLaughlin’s passion for dogs sent him to Europe several times, landed him on the cable TV program “MythBusters” and made him a lot of friends, colleagues said. At least 100 police dogs and their handlers will be part of his funeral Friday in Fremont.

McLaughlin is survived by his wife, Kathy, two sons — Michael II and Chris — and daughter Kim.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Harbor Light Church, 4760 Thornton Ave., Fremont. The Foster City Police Officers’ Association has established the McLaughlin Family Trust at Merrill Lynch. Donations can be made by calling 925-945-4882.
